2011 was an eventful year for the Henderson Fire Fighters. Through our partnerships with the City of Henderson, civic organizations and local businesses we were able to implement two very important preventive programs for our community, "Check Your Seats in the Heat" and "Drowning Prevention Awareness."
Both of these campaigns are geared towards saving lives and works to our goal of being the safest city in America. As fire fighters and paramedics, we respond to one too many of these devastating calls. We will continue to bring education and awareness to our community to ensure that these preventable tragedies do not occur.
We saw reports on our cardiac survivability report soar. For year-to-date, we have more than doubled the national average for patients that are discharged home from a cardiac arrest that have no neurologic deficits. In certain instances of cardiac arrest (ventricular fibrillation), we have achieved up to a 50% survival rate with 29% of those patients going home with no deficits. Nationally this survival rate is 21% for these instances of out of hospital cardiac arrest we have already exceeded all of our 2010 cases. These are patients who returned to their families, their careers, and their lives after being found with no pulse.
In keeping with our mission on promoting preventive programs, we have partnered with the City of Henderson Fire Department and will be hosting two "Healthy Heart" Health Fairs located at the Heritage Senior Center on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and at City of Henderson Fire Station 99 on Wednesday, February 22, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
The City of Henderson Fire Department will be providing free blood pressure checks as one of those preventative steps in their "Healthy Heart" initiative in the month of February, American Heart Month. Local health-related vendors will also be offering attendees a free service or information related to healthcare, as well as giving away promotional items. The "Healthy Heart" initiative aims to raise awareness of heart disease and cardiac arrest and encourages the community to live a healthier lifestyle.
Bringing the message home last month was the designation of Henderson as America's second safest city by Forbes Magazine. What a great city we live in. Happy New Year! And may your family be filled with hope and prosperity.
We will see you in the community.
Sincerely,
Dan Pentkowski
President
